4. A Powerful Duo: How New Diabetes Medications Are Protecting Hearts and Kidneys

Promising New Stem

The treatment of type 2 diabetes has come a long way, thanks to two groundbreaking classes of medications: SGLT2 inhibitors (Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors) and GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) receptor agonists. These drugs do more than just help control blood glucose+—they’re also proving to be powerful protectors of heart and kidney health.

Recent research has shown that when SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists are used together, they can significantly lower the risk of serious cardiovascular problems, like heart attacks and strokes, as well as protect against kidney disease. This is a huge step forward in diabetes care, where the focus is now shifting from just managing blood glucose to also preventing other serious health issues.

A large analysis called the SMART-C study looked at data from 12 major clinical trials involving over 73,000 people with diabetes. Among them, more than 3,000 were already using GLP-1 receptor agonists.

      The results were impressive:

Heart Health: Adding SGLT2 inhibitors to GLP-1 receptor agonists reduced the risk of major heart problems—like heart attacks, strokes, and deaths related to cardiovascular issues—by 11%. The risk of being hospitalized due to heart failure or dying from heart-related problems was reduced by 23%.

Kidney Protection: The combination also provided strong protection for the kidneys. The risk of chronic kidney disease getting worse was cut by 33%, and the decline in kidney function was slowed by nearly 60%.

Importantly, there were no new safety concerns when these medications were used together, which is great news for people looking to manage their diabetes more effectively.

SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists each have their own strengths. SGLT2 inhibitors are particularly good at preventing heart failure and protecting kidney health, while GLP-1 receptor agonists are strong at defending against heart attacks and strokes and also offer kidney protection. Together, they provide comprehensive protection that can make a big difference in the lives of people with type 2 diabetes.
