This year’s theme for World Diabetes Day was ‘The Nurse and Diabetes’, to create awareness about the crucial role of nurses in the treatment and management of diabetes. World Diabetes Day Health Talk
Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev was the speaker of a virtual event on the World’s Diabetes Day Health Talk organized by SN United Mission International, Swasthi Foundation and Trivandrum Oncology Club on 14 November 2020. He lectured on ‘Modern diabetes treatment to ensure a happy joyful life.’

Nurses CME
An educational event exclusively for nurses ‘Empowering Nurses’ was organized by IMA-AMS Nemom, JPEF and Kesavadev Trust on behalf of Word Diabetes Day 2020 themed ‘Nurses make the difference’ on 15 November 2020. The program was set off by Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev, Chairman and managing Director, JDC with a brief introduction and welcome. The course Coordinators of the event were Ms.Gopika Krishnan, Academics and Research Head, JDC, Ms.Geethu Sanal, Chief dietitian, JDC and Dr.Asha Ashik, Consultant Diabetologist, JDC Kochi. The technical session begun with a talk on ‘Basics of Diabetes’ by Dr.Arun Shankar, Medical director and senior consultant, JDC, Trivandrum. This was followed by a talk by Dr.Sajna Shijin, RSSDI fellow, JDC on ‘Causes and Classification’. Dr.Asha Ashik gave a comprehensive talk on ‘Medications for diabetes’. Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev spoke on topics including ‘Glucometer s, CGMs’, ‘Counselling by Diabetes Nurse’ and ‘Role of Nurse in Vaccination in patients with diabetes’. Ms.Akhila Manoj, Diabetes Technology Nurse, JDC, presented on ‘how to train patients on insulin pump’. The program was concluded by a vote of thanks given by Dr.Arun Shankar. Around 670 nurses from around Kerala participated in this 2 hour long virtual event.World Diabetes Day Symposia
On 17th November 2020, Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev spoke at ‘Observation of World Diabetes Day & Symposia on Diabetes’, a virtual event arranged by Indian Medical Association, Palai, organized under the leadership of Dr.G.Harish Kumar. The topic of his session was ‘Life Saving & Easily Available Newer Diabetes Technologies in India’. Dr.Vijayakumar G was the moderator. Dr.Aravind's Diabetes Centre, Bengaluru, held a highly fruitful two day International virtual event Diabetes Summit on 22 November 2020. Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev undertook a workshop and demonstrated the first ever CGM, the CGMS Gold and the most recent Libre. On behalf of Kesavadev Trust, JPEF and IMA Nemom, World Diabetes Month JPEF Mini CME ‘100 Years of Insulin- Series 1’ was hosted virtually on 24 November 2020 from 07:00 pm to 09:00 pm. The scientific symposium gave comprehensive lectures on diabetes and related subjects through a series of live educational sessions and panel discussions with the experts.
The program was set off by Ms.Gopika Krishnan, Head, Academics and Research, Jothydev's Diabetes Research Centre (JDC) with a brief welcome. The scientific sessions began with a lecture on ‘Influenza Vaccination in Diabetes- It’s Beyond a Flu Shot’ by Dr.P.Arjun, Senior Consultant and Group Coordinator Department of Respiratory Medicine, KIMS Health, Trivandrum. Dr.Arun Shankar, Senior consultant Diabetologist and Medical Director, JDC was the chairperson of the session.
This was followed by a momentary inaugural function. The event was inaugurated by Dr.Mohanan Nair, Chairman, Professional Protection Scheme, IMA Kerala State, Chairman, AMS, Chapter IMA Nemom, and Founder President IMA Nemom.
Next was the Theme symposium- 100 years of insulin, for which Dr.Arun S Menon, Consultant Endocrinologist, Lisie Hospital, Kochi and Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev, Chairman and Managing Director, JDC, gave a thorough discussion on ‘Series-1: Advances with molecule and delivery devices’. The moderators of the session were Dr.Prasanth Sankar, Consultant in Internal Medicine & Diabetes, MGM Muthoot Hospitals, Pathanamthitta and Dr.Ashwin David Ashok, Senior Diabetologist and Clinical Head, JDC, Attingal.
The final session was an all-inclusive discussion by Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev and Ms.Gopika Krishnan on ‘Demystifying the Glucose Monitoring Terminologies’. Dr.Mohan T Shenoy, Consultant Endocrinologist, GG Hospital, Trivandrum and Sree Gokulam Medical College and Research Foundation, Trivandrum moderated the panel discussion.
The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Ms.Sunitha Jothydev, Executive Director, JDC. Around 500 doctors and allied health workers from around Kerala participated in this virtual educational event
48th Annual Meeting RSSDI 2020
Over the 4 days of November 26-29, 2020, 48th Annual Meeting of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India was held virtually with discussions on improved diabetes care. The theme of the event was ‘Reaching out to the unreached, for improving diabetes care’. Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev, Chairman and Managing Director, JDC, spoke on ‘Reaching the end of the rainbow in T2DM Management: Journey of GLP-1RA from concept to pen to a pill’ in the session titled, ‘Making the most of innovations in diabetes therapy’. The co-speakers of this exquisite session were Dr.Ajay Kumar and Dr.Shehla Shaikh. The session was chaired by Dr.P.D.Pahwa and Dr.Dhiren Patel. The Rapporteur of the session was Dr.Vishal Chopra.
On 27 November 2020, Dr.Arun Shankar, Medical Director and Senior diabetologist, JDC, was the speaker of the session, ‘Prof.MMS Ahuja Symposium: Current Prevailing Insulin Practices in India’, representing South India. Dr.Dhruvi Hassani, Dr.Bharat Saboo, Dr.Mahuya Sikdar, Dr.Rupam Chaudhury and Dr. Ashutosh Chaturvedi represented Western India, Central India, East India, North East India and North India respectively. The rapporteur of the session was Dr.Amit Kumar Das and chairpersons were Dr.Vasanth Kumar and Dr.T.Palaniappan.
On 28 November 2020, Dr.Ashwin David Ashok, Senior Diabetologist and Clinical Head, JDC, Attingal was the chair of the session on Type 1 DM along with Dr.Sujata Jali. The Rapporteur of the session was Dr.Manisha Gupta. The speakers were Dr.Archana Sarda, Dr.Sanjay Ghosh and Dr.Suresh Damodaran . The session fostered an extended discussion over the topic.
Ms.Gopika Krishnan, Head of Academics, JDC, was the rapporteur of Workshop 5, titled, ‘Insulin Therapy (Basics) on the same day. The chairpersons were Dr.C.Madhu and Dr.Sonali Patange. The speakers of this remarkable session were Dr.Yousuf Khan, Dr.J.Aravinda, Dr.Navneet Shah, Dr.Anjali Bhatt and Dr.Nanditha Arun.
Mental Health in Type 1 diabetes
P.Kesavadev Trust-Type 1 Diabetes Sweet Stars (KT1DP) and Kerala Type 1 Diabetic Welfare Society, jointly organized a virtual Educational event in the context of World Diabetes Month, on 29th November 2020. The 2 hr program covered topics such as Type 1: How to shape the mind?, How to maintain happiness in life forever, Food and some simple calculations, When to start newer technologies? Many Type-1 stars volunteered themselves and shared their experience on technologies and their mental struggles. The dynamic participation of patients, their family along with experts made the event a success.
The pinnacle of the program was the session on mental health of patients as well as their family by Mr.Santhosh Sisupal. Ms.Sunitha Jothydev also spoke on coping skills in type 1 diabetes.
The experts from Jothydev’s Diabetes Research Centre, Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev, Dr.Arun Shankar, Ms.Gopika Krishnan, Dr.Ashwin David Ashok, Dr.Sajna Shijin, Ms.Geethu Sanal and Ms.Viji Krishna engaged in the program.
Mr.Abdul Jaleel, Secretary of Kerala Type 1 Diabetic Welfare Society delivered the welcome address. The event was formally inaugurated by Mr.Vijesh TR, President, Kerala Type 1 Diabetic Welfare Society. This was followed by a discussion involving the experts. The program concluded with vote of thanks by Mr.Jeevan Jacob, State Treasurer of Kerala Type 1 Diabetic Welfare Society.
