Dr.P.J. Geevarghese, popularly known as father of Fibrocalculous Pancreatic Diabetes (FCPD), is one of the founding pillars of diabetes research in India. He was an eminent diabetologist of international reputation and was the executive patron of RSSDI (Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India).
During the 1960s, FCPD contributed to about 29.3% of the registered diabetes in Kerala. Owing to the uniqueness of the disease and its peculiar geographical prevalence the ICMR had started a cell for the disease in Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala. Dr.Varghese and his colleagues had succeeded in characterizing the clinical features of the disease and published several articles. He had documented more than 1700 cases in his monographs and this number may be probably the highest reported in the world.
