FDA clears Omnipod 5 automated insulin delivery system

      The Omnipod 5 automated insulin delivery system has been cleared by the FDA for people with type 1 diabetes aged 6 and up. The Omnipod 5 is a combination of Insulet’s tubeless patch insulin pump with the Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitoring system and a compatible smartphone with the Omnipod 5 mobile app to allow for automatic insulin adjustments for people with type 1 diabetes. Omnipod 5 will allow users to adjust glucose targets based on the time of day and has a feature called HypoProtect for times when the wearer has a reduced need for insulin. The mobile app comes with an integrated SmartBolus Calculator that receives CGM data from the Dexcom G6 and can adjust insulin delivery based on where it predicts glucose levels will be in 60 minutes.
