Dr.Edward R Damiano
Dr.Edward R Damiano is the innovator dad of iLet Bionic Pancreas System which is a pocket-sized, wearable investigational medical device that is designed to autonomously control blood-sugar levels. A biomedical engineering professor at Boston University and CEO of Beta Bionics by profession, Damiano stepped into the path of designing artificial pancreas after his son David was diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of 11 months.
As a promise to his son, he made it possible for the device that can help his son in managing diabetes. The device has tested well in laboratory and real-world settings. The artificial pancreas named as the iLet Bionic Pancreas System is designed to function as three medical devices in one. It can be configured as an insulin-only bionic pancreas, a glucagon-only bionic pancreas or a bihormonal bionic pancreas using insulin and glucagon. The cellphone-sized wearable device monitors blood sugar 24/7 and releases the hormones insulin or glucagon to keep levels steady, just like a healthy pancreas function.
