5. JDC GEMS Picture of the Month
This is the classical Dawn phenomenon in a 22 year old girl patient with type 1 diabetes getting treated at Jothydev’s Diabetes Research Centre. There is a typical steep rise in blood glucose values during the early morning hours. Patient was on basal bolus regimen.

After this observation in CGM was made, patient was advised to switch over to Insulin pump therapy. Insulin pump offers variable basal rate and is probably the only one therapy which can effectively address dawn phenomenon.

Dawn phenomenon is supposed to be due to the action of counter regulatory hormones subsequently resulting in high blood sugars during the early morning hours and persists while the patient wakes up from sleep in the morning.
