Stanley Rossiter Benedict was an American chemist best known for discovering Benedict's reagent. Stanley got famous through the Otto Folin work which the latter published in volume 13 of the American Journal of Physiology. In this publication, Folin described some methods on how to analyze qualitatively and quantitatively some elements in the urine such as urea, uric acid, ammonia, creatine, and creatinine. Benedict was especially interested in the methods for the quantitative determination of glucose in urine and blood. He came up with more efficient, simple methods which practically replaced all of Folin's ones.
The name of Benedict is well known to physicians and patients with diabetes because of his qualitative and quantitative tests for glycosuria, which have been so widely adopted. Stanley Benedict was editor of the Journal of Biological Chemistry from 1925 until his death.
