November 5, 2021: AIAARO Kerala Chapter 2021
All India Association for Advancing Research in Obesity (AIAARO) Kerala Chapter in association with Jothydev's Professional Education Forum (JPEF) organized the 3rd Annual Meet of AIAARO Kerala Chapter 2021, a virtual conference with the theme ‘Mind it’ on 5th November 2021.The 6-hour program was set off by Ms. Geethu Sanal, Secretary AIAARO Kerala Chapter, with a brief welcome. Dr. Benny P V, Organising Committee Chairperson addressed the program. Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev, Vice President, AIAARO Kerala Chapter gave a brief introduction on AIAARO.The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Samuel Koshy, Indian Medical Association, State Elect President. Ms. Shilpa Joshi, National Secretary, AIAARO and Dr. Syam D Gopal, Scientific Committee Chairperson gave the felicitation. The inaugural and first technical session was by Dr. Anjana Mohan. She spoke on 'Diet and Diabetes: Unravelling the link-The ICMR-Indian Study'. Dr. Arun Shankar, Senior consultant Diabetologist and Medical Director, JDC chaired the session.This was followed by the nutrition symposium. The symposium had three sessions. The first session 'Role of Meal Replacers in Weight loss' was given by Ms. Shilpa Joshi. Ms.Sheryl Salis spoke on 'childhood diabesity and the impact of HFSS Foods', the second session. Dr. Dharini Krishnan lectured on ‘weight loss: only goal or much more for obesity?’. The sessions of the symposium were moderated by Ms. Sunitha Jothydev, Executive Director, JDC, Dr. Elizabeth K.E, UNICEF Consultant Kerala State and Dr. Asha Ashik, Clinical Head, JDC Kochi respectively.Next was a panel discussion titled ‘Looking Good, Feeling Good’ and moderated by Ms. Sheryl Salis. Ms. Shiny Surendran, Mr. Rajiv Ambat, Dr. Kavita Gupta, and Dr. Ranjani Harish were the panelists. Subsequently, Dr. Banshi Saboo spoke on ‘Science of Obesity: Understanding the underlying factors’ under the chair of Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev.Following was the Experts session titled, 'Battling Weight Gain'. Dr. Arun S Menon, Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev, Dr. Johnny Kannampilly and Dr. Vidyut Sodha were the experts who spoke. Dr. Arun S. Menon spoke on ‘Role of the Microbiome in the genesis and management of obesity', under the chair of Dr. Madhu N. Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev lectured on ‘Peptide pill for Diabesity' and the chairperson of the talk was Dr.Jayalekshmi R. Kurup. Dr. Johnny Kannampilly under the chair of Dr. Sumesh Raj, spoke on 'Medical Management of Obesity- Current Indian Scenario’. The last talk of the session ‘Management of Subcutaneous Obesity’ was given by Dr. Vidyut Sodha. Ms. Gopika Krishnan, Director of Academics and Research chaired the talk.The last technical session of the event was a panel discussion, titled ‘Multiple faces of obesity- how to target?’. Dr. Radhakrishnan A.P was the moderator of the session. Dr. Benny P.V, Dr. Syam D. Gopal, Ms. Geethu Sanal, Dr. Arun B. Nair, and Dr. Sumesh Raj were the panelists.The event was concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Sumesh Raj, Organising Secretary of the event. Around 450 delegates, including doctors, dietitians and allied healthcare workers attended the virtual conference. The event was remarkable and worthwhile.
November 12, 2021: Type 1 Virtual Patient Education Program
On behalf of World Diabetes Day, Jothydev's Diabetes Research hosted a virtual patient education program exclusively for children with type 1 diabetes and their family on 12 November 2021 Centre in association with Type 1 Diabetic Welfare Society. The theme for World Diabetes Day 2021-23 is access to diabetes care.The program began with Mr. Abdul Jaleel, State Secretary, Type 1 Diabetic Welfare Society, welcoming the guests and the participants. Mr.Vijesh T.R, State President, Type 1 Diabetic Welfare Society, presided over the function. Ms. Sunitha Jothydev, Executive Director, JDC introduced and welcomed the chief guest of the program, Ms. Mallika Sukumaran. Ms. Mallika Sukumaran inaugurated the program and spoke to the children.Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev, Chairman and Managing Director of Jothydev’s Diabetes Research centre, Dr.Arun Shankar, Medical Director, JDC, Ms. Gopika Krishnan, Director, Academics and Research, JDC, Dr. Asha Ashik, Clinical Head, JDC Kochi, Ms. Geethu Sanal, Chief Dietician, Ms. Viji Krishna, Dietitian and Ms.Akhila Manoj, Diabetes Nurse, together answered the queries raised by the parents. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms.Sudha Sreejesh, Advisory Board member of the welfare society. Over 200 children and their families participated actively in the virtual event.
November 13, 2021: Type 2 Virtual Patient Education Program.
An educational event exclusively for the patients of Jothydev's Diabetes Research Centres on behalf of Word Diabetes Day 2021 themed ‘access to diabetes care’ was conducted virtually via Zoom on 13 November 2021. The program began with a welcome by Mr. Jayapalan A Nair, Director of Operations.Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev, Dr. Arun Shankar, Ms. Gopika Krishnan, Ms. Geethu Sanal, Dr. Asha Ashik and Ms. Indu Rajalekshmi gave their valuable insights and advice on the management of diabetes. About 300 patients joined the virtual meeting and took part enthusiastically, clearing their doubts on the topic. The digital meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Sunitha Jothydev.

On behalf of World Diabetes Day, the WDD projects were inaugurated on 14 November 2021, at Kesavadev Hall, Trivandrum. The program was set off by Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev, with a brief welcome. The program was felicitated by Mr. Omana Kuttan, Type-1 Diabetes Welfare Society Coordinator, Trivandrum. Mr. Omar Sherief, Internal Representative of Life for a child project, spoke about Diabetes day and diabetes management in children. In addition, Ms. Indu Thampy- Cine Artist, Miss Kerala 2010 shared her experience with diabetes.Dr. Arun Shankar, Ms. Gopika Krishnan, and Ms. Geethu Sanal lead the diabetes awareness program. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Ms. Sunitha Jothydev, Executive Director, JDC. Around 100 people participated.

Jothydev’s Diabetes Research Centre and Kesavadev Trust and organized a two-day insulin training workshop - iSchool Series 6, virtually on 18-19 November 2021. Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev, Dr.Arun Shankar, Dr.Asha Ashik, Ms.Gopika Krishnan, Ms.Geethu Sanal, Dr.Ashwin David Ashok, Ms.Akhila Manoj and Dr.Yaseen Unes discussed diverse topics related to insulin, including, an overview of diabetes management and insulin therapy, insulin regimens, types, benefits and challenges, insulin initiation, titration and intensification, basics of nutrition in diabetes, insulin therapy with OHA, insulin storage, injection and techniques, dos and don'ts, newer technologies for insulin delivery, insulin delivery devices and case studies and discussion. This was followed by active interactions. 50 doctors from across the state participated in the two-day virtual event.
November 20, 2021: Covid Associated Mucormycosis (CAM); a new study
An article based on a recent multicentric observational study from 23 centres across India published in the journal Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews on COVID-19 associated Mucormycosis (CAM ) was published in various newspapers. The study reiterated the association of CAM with steroids and high glucose. Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev was one of the investigators of the study.

The 2 hour Facebook live with the JDC team as part of 2021 World Diabetes Month beheld a healthy Q&A session on 29 November 2021. The Facebook live was inaugurated by Amb. T P Sreenivasan IFS, Former Ambassador & Permanent Representative of India to United Nations. 30 November 2021: JPEF WDD National Hybrid CME
Jothydev's Professional Education Forum (JPEF) and P Kesavadev Trust in association with the IMA Nemom chapter, hosted the JPEF World Diabetes Day National Hybrid CME with the theme, 'We will do it', on 30 November 2021 at Kesavadev Hall, Jothydev's Diabetes Research Centre, Trivandrum. This CME marked the concluding event of the one-month-long activities of the World Diabetes Month conducted by the team. Honorable Member of Parliament and Former International Diplomat, Dr. Shashi Tharoor, inaugurated the event virtually.
The program was set off by Ms.Gopika Krishnan, Director, Academics and Research, Jothydev's Diabetes Research Centre (JDC) with a brief welcome. The scientific sessions began with the lecture on 'Emperor Program: Implications of empowering HF care across risk spectrum' by Dr. Anand Pillai, Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist Ananthapuri Hospital and Research Institute, Trivandrum, under the chair of respected Dr. Gopinathan Nair. This was followed by a talk by Dr. Sunil Prasobh P, Professor of Medicine and Diabetologist, Govt. Medical College, Kollam, on 'Changing the course of metabolic cardio-renal risk in patients with T2DM: role of SGLT2i/DPP4i. The session was chaired by Dr. Arun Shankar, Medical Director, JDC.Dr. Sumesh Raj, Professor of Internal Medicine and Diabetologist Sree Gokulam Medical College, Trivandrum, subsequently spoke on 'Achieving the treatment goal in T2D- making the most of innovations with insulin' under the chair of Dr. Asha Ashik, Clinical Head, JDC, Kochi. The last technical session of the event was a talk on 'At 100 years, now, a protein in a pill, by Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev, Chairman and Managing Director, JDC. Dr. Benny PV, Professor & HOD Community Medicine, Sree Gokulam Medical College, Trivandrum, chaired the session. Dr. Arun Shankar concluded the event with a vote of thanks.The event witnessed the participation of around 500 delegates across India, joined virtually and 30 delegates, joined in person for this educational event
