Some more benefits for coffee lovers. Increased coffee consumption increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and adiponectin concentrations and reduces inflammatory markers. Coffee has another benefit also, it lowers the risk of T2 diabetes which we have already mentioned in our 15 th issue of Gems.
The researchers conducted the study (lead by Dr Kerstin Kempf ,University Düsseldorf, Germany and colleagues ) in 47 habitual coffee drinkers to assess the beneficial effects of coffee drinking. First they have stopped coffee drinking for 1 month, then in the second month consumed four cups/day of filter coffee, and in the third month consumed eight cups/day of filter coffee.
Measurements of lipids, inflammatory markers, markers of glucose metabolism, and adiponectin were taken after each month.
The research results show that compared with consumption of no cups/day, consumption of eight cups/day of coffee reduced the concentration of the inflammatory markers interleukin-18 and 8-isoprostane by a median of 8% and 16%, respectively and there is a significant increase in Adiponectin in a median of 6% following consumption of eight cups/day coffee compared with no cups/day. In addition HDL-cholesterol levels were up 7%, from 48 mg/dL to 51 mg/dL, by the end of the second month.
