Caution on sugar intake for infants

The USDA and HHS have released the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines, which advise infants to be fed exclusively with breast milk without added sugar for the first six months of their life and calls for limiting toddler's sugar intake to less than 10% of calories a day after 2 years of age.

Some of the other highlights of the guidelines include:

  • Foods rich in iron and zinc can be included as infant cereal which helps in brain development, learning ability and immune function.
  • The guidelines also recommend the reduction of excessive sodium intake critical to reducing cardiovascular risk.
