In a significant stride towards reliable diabetes management, Jothydev’s Diabetes Research Centre recently showcased a pivotal study at the 17th Advanced Technologies & Treatments in Diabetes (ATTD) Conference 2024, Florence, Italy. This research meticulously evaluated the accuracy of six widely used glucose meters in India, providing valuable insights for both people with diabetes and healthcare professionals.
With a keen focus on On Call Plus, i-Sens Cool, One Touch Verio Flex, Contour Plus, and Accuchek Instant, the study compared the readings from these devices against laboratory standards. The procedure was rigorously conducted with 75 individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, employing both capillary and venous blood sampling methods to ensure accuracy.
The results were interesting. Accuchek Instant, for instance, displayed a remarkable alignment with lab values, signaling its reliability. Similarly, devices like Cool, On Call Plus, and Contour Plus also demonstrated strong agreement with laboratory results. Notably, the accuracy of the tested meters fall under the agreeable zones of Clarke Error Grid Analysis, affirming their trustworthiness in daily blood glucose monitoring.
The study, however, goes beyond just accuracy. It emphasizes the importance of considering factors such as ease of use, cost, availability of consumables, and individual healthcare needs when selecting a glucose meter. Although the research provided critical insights, it also recognized its own limitations, such as its exclusive focus on type 2 diabetes and the relatively limited sample size.
The glucose meters assessed are not only accurate but also reliable for regular use in India. This revelation is instrumental in guiding patients and healthcare providers towards making informed choices in diabetes management devices, fostering confidence in the journey towards effective diabetes control.
