Tidepool + Ōura: A Bold Leap for Inclusive Diabetes Research

      What’s New:

Tidepool has teamed up with Ōura, the makers of the world’s leading smart ring to launch a landmark research initiative. This effort will create one of the most comprehensive real-world datasets in diabetes by linking biometric data from Oura Rings with diabetes device data like CGMs and insulin pumps.

      Why This Is Exciting:

  • Ōura is providing Generation 3 Oura Rings and memberships to study participants.
  • The study will collect deep biometric insights: sleep patterns, heart rate, body temperature trends, activity, and even menstrual cycle data, then combine them with CGM and pump data.
  • This is designed to be broadly available for diabetes researchers, not just within Tidepool, enabling next-gen research into how our daily physiology really affects blood sugar.
  • Importantly, this collaboration aims to bridge long-standing gaps in research around important physiological factors, especially for women’s health, where things like menstrual cycles and temperature have often been ignored.

      How It Will Work:

  • The study is expected to open for recruitment in early 2026, under IRB approval.
  • Participants will opt in via Tidepool to share their data; once anonymized, it will be pooled into Tidepool’s Big Data Donation Project and made available to researchers globally.

      Potential Impact:

  • Allows for truly multimodal data, combining lifestyle, biometric, and glucose device data to paint a richer picture of diabetes.
  • Accelerates development of personalized diabetes care, helping researchers craft interventions that reflect real life, not just lab settings.
  • Empowers research into women-specific diabetes factors, potentially unlocking insights around hormonal cycles, sleep, stress, and their metabolic effects.
  • Could guide future clinical guidelines, wearable innovation, and more inclusive research models.

      GEMS Take-Home:

This partnership isn’t just about gathering more data, it’s about gathering smarter data. By combining real-world wearable metrics with glucose and insulin device data, Tidepool and Ōura are creating a foundation for next-generation, deeply individualized diabetes care.
