Lovastatin a naturally occuring product was discovered in 1970s and was considered for clinical trials to lower LDL cholesterol. It is naturally seen with Aspergillus terreus. Oyster mushroom naturally contains upto 2.8% lovastatin. Lovastatin was approved by US FDA in 1987 and was historically the first statin approved by FDA.
