KT1DP Sweet Stars Project: 14 Jan 2016

Type 1 diabetes is a rare form of diabetes mainly affecting kids and teenagers. In Kerala, there are thousands of children being affected and the numbers are alarmingly increasing. In developed countries, the management of type 1 diabetes is much more structured and the children will have a normal lifespan similar to those without the disease. Dr.M.K.Muneer while inaugurating the best parent award function organised by Kesavadev Trust Type 1 diabetes Project (KT1DP) ‘Sweet Stars’, described the efforts by his government in specifically targeting children with disabling illnesses.

Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev, the Managing Trustee of P.Kesavadev Trust described the challenges treating the illness despite the trust supporting free insulin, glucometer, strips and lab investigations for hundreds of poor patients. The project will now undertake extensive steps in educating parents and teachers across the state of Kerala with the support of local NGOs to improve awareness about this disease.

Dr.M.V.Pillai, world renowned Oncologist and scholar suggested partnership of private academic institutions with similar Govt institutions without which world class treatment facilities will not be available to common man. He strongly recommended KT1DP to initiate steps to form a type 1 diabetes registry in Kerala.

Smt. Indu Thampy, former Miss Kerala & type 1 diabetes Ambassador shared her experience living and surviving with type 1 diabetes since her childhood.

Dr Elizabeth K.E, Head of the Department of Pediatrics, SAT Hospital emphasized the need for continuing affectionate care as children with diabetes grow older and care is shifted to adult medicine.

Dr. Arun Shankar gave welcome & Smt. Sunitha Jothydev offered vote of thanks. Mrs.Sheeja received the KT1DP Sweet Stars 2016 best parent award from Dr.Muneer.
