CDC Advisory Committee Widens Influenza Vaccination Target Group

All the adults from the age of six months and older should receive an annual influenza vaccine beginning next flu season (2010-2011), recommends CDC (The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention).

Until now the influenza vaccine was for some particular age group like people between the ages of 6 months and 18 years and those aged 50 years and older, those at increased risk for complications from illness(eg:all diabetes subjects), and anyone in close contact with higher-risk individuals.

Major reason cited for the change in recommendations is that the pandemic H1N1 influenza virus has been more severe in people aged 19 to 49 years than in older adults. The 2010-2011 seasonal influenza vaccine is expected to include a strain of the H1N1 virus, as recommended by both US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel and the World Health Organization within the past week.

Failures with insulin pump? Not Device defect but it’s the learning error!!!

A US Govt. Advisory panel infers recently that while using insulin pumps, the problem area lies with improper usage rather than device defect. FDA requested an expert panel to recommend possible ways to alleviate the issues reported from the pump users irrespective of pump manufactures, and this panel consisting of experts from outside the FDA came up with their results.

Patient education on proper device settings and other matters was key to minimizing complications and also risks from malfunctions were minimal as long as patients checked blood sugar regularly and had other insulin sources available, reports the expert panel. If a diabetic "has been educated and has their insulin in hand, there are little if any risks," said panel chairman William Jarvis, a South Carolina physician.
